Tours, trips and activities in Stewart Island

Found just 30km south of the South Island, Stewart Island is New Zealand's third largest island and located across the Foveaux Strait.

Also known as Rakiura which means ‘the land of glowing skies’ in the Māori language, less than 500 people call Stewart Island home, with over 85% of the island comprising beautiful national park.

Popular among those who love hiking and birdwatching, Stewart Island has nearly 300km of walking tracks suited to short walks, day walks and multi-day hikes.

The wildlife also love it here, with the island a haven for brown kiwi or Tokoeka, blue penguins and the rare yellow-eyed penguins.

Explore from the sky

Tick Stewart Island off your bucket list and experience this tiny paradise on an incredible day trip with return scenic flights from Queenstown.

An incredible opportunity to add a day trip to your Queenstown itinerary with the flexibility to do your own thing, the island is full of hidden treasures and you can discover them all across 6 amazing hours.

Tucked just 30km from the end of New Zealand’s South Island, you will find yourself in a different world, soaring above some of Stewart Island’s untouched, rugged coastline.

On approach, pass Horseshoe Bay and Half Moon Bay before descending on Ryan’s Creek airstrip on the hill overlooking the township of Oban. Spend the day exploring Stewart Island before departing back for Queenstown in the late afternoon.

Explore from the sea

The Ulva Island Explorer gives guests the chance to immerse themselves in nature with a cruise around Stewart Island's Paterson Inlet, followed by a guided walk at Ulva Island Wildlife Sanctuary.

The cruise will showcase some of Paterson Inlet’s stunning scenery with its hidden coves and unspoilt beaches. While on board, also keep a look out for fur seals and penguins as there are many of them around this area!

Stop by Ulva Island's Wildlife Sanctuary for a 45-minute guided walk, before spending the remainder of the cruise around Paterson Inlet, as you relax on board the modern catamaran and enjoy the coastal scenery before returning to base.
