Port Stephens - Things to do

Port Stephens is located on a peninsula in the Hunter Region in New South Wales, roughly 200 kilometres north of Sydney. Port Stephens is blessed with stunning landscapes, jaw-dropping beaches, bays, and cosy towns.

Nelson Bay is one of the coolest places within the Port Stephens area. This township is a base for surfing, whale watching, and hiking around the peninsula. Some of the most fantastic lookout points include Gan Gan Hill Lookout, Tomaree Mountain, and Fingal Head.

Tilligerry is another visitor’s favourite, with its network of walking trails and one of the few koala populations in the region. Keep your eyes up to the trees to spot these furry creatures!

Beach-hopping is consistently ranked as one of the top things to do in Port Stephens. Head for Fingal Beach if you want the postcard type of beach with white sand and blue water, and walk around One Mile Beach if you’re into dramatic rock formations and astonishing sand dunes. This is one of the most scenic beaches in Port Stephens!

More sand dunes can be found at Worimi Regional Park and Anna Bay. You can visit the latter by booking a Port Stephens beach trip from Sydney. This tour allows you to do sandboarding at Anna Bay, swimming and snorkelling at Fly Point, and have an authentic Aussie barbecue.

The closest tourist hotspot south of Port Stephens is Sydney. If you’re planning to travel onwards to Australia’s largest city, you can prepare yourself for an exciting time. Here, you can book a sea kayak tour through Sydney Harbour, enjoy a day of wining and dining in the Hunter Valley Region, or go to the Blue Mountains for a sunset you won’t ever forget!

If you decide to travel north from Port Stephens, you might want to pass by Byron Bay. Here, you can learn how to conquer the waves by taking a 2-day surf course or enjoy the calming beauty of nature through a kayak tour on the Brunswick River. There are heaps of cool things to do along Australia’s east coast, and it’s easy to explore everything from Port Stephens.
